Tuberculosis (TB) Test

Health care jobs, daycares, schools and the immigration process require a current tuberculosis test. At Clínica Hispana Corazón y Vida in Pasadena we give the PPD skin test and the IGRA blood test, read and interpret the result and hand you the documentation, in Spanish and without an appointment.

Which test do I need?

• Skin test (PPD or Mantoux): a small amount is injected under the skin of the forearm and you must return in 48 to 72 hours for the reading. It is the usual one for employment and school.
• Blood test (IGRA): a single visit, no later reading; it is the one USCIS requires in the immigration exam and the right choice if you had the BCG vaccine, because the vaccine can cause false positives on the skin test.

If you are not sure, bring your employer's or school's form and we tell you which one they accept.

What is the skin test like?

1. A brief review: previous tests, BCG vaccine, symptoms and pregnancy.
2. Injection in the forearm; you feel a slight pinch.
3. Do not cover it with a bandage or scratch it; you can bathe normally.
4. Return 48 to 72 hours later for the reading; if more than 72 hours pass, it must be repeated.
5. The induration is measured in millimeters and the result is given in writing.

What does a positive result mean?

It indicates contact with the bacteria, not necessarily active disease. The next step is a chest X-ray and a symptom evaluation; most positives correspond to latent infection, which is treated with medication so it does not activate. We guide you and coordinate the referral if needed.

When should the test be repeated?

Many employers require it yearly or at hiring. If you already had a documented positive test, the skin test should not be repeated: in that case you submit the X-ray and the medical evaluation.

Which symptoms should I watch for?

A cough lasting more than three weeks, low-grade fever in the afternoons, night sweats, weight or appetite loss and fatigue. With those symptoms the test alone is not enough: an X-ray and an evaluation are ordered the same day, and it is best to wear a mask when you come.
