Many women in Pasadena put off the gynecology visit for lack of time, because of language, or because they "don't feel anything." Yet the problems that worry us most, such as cervical cancer or infections, are best detected while they still cause no symptoms. At Clínica Hispana Corazón y Vida the visit is in Spanish, without an appointment and without insurance. Here is what to expect.
How often should I get a Pap test?
Current U.S. guidelines recommend:
| Age | Frequency |
|---|---|
| 21 to 29 | Pap test every 3 years |
| 30 to 65 | Pap test every 3 years, or HPV test every 5 years |
| Over 65 | May stop if previous results were normal |
If you had an abnormal result, the provider shortens the interval. The test takes a few minutes and needs no special preparation; avoid intercourse, douching and vaginal products for 48 hours beforehand.
What does the well-woman visit include?
- Blood pressure, weight and history review.
- Pelvic and breast exam.
- Pap test and, when appropriate, HPV test.
- Sexually transmitted infection testing.
- Guidance on contraception, fertility, periods or menopause.
- Ultrasound when the uterus and ovaries need to be seen.
You may ask to be seen by a woman; tell us when you arrive.
Which contraceptive options are there?
At the visit we review your health and your plans and explain the options: pills, injection, patch, ring, long-acting devices and barrier methods. We tell you which ones we can start at the clinic and where to go for the others. See the details of our contraceptive methods.
What do I do if I think I am pregnant?
Come in for a pregnancy test in urine or blood. If it is positive, we confirm the weeks, review your general health, start folic acid and guide you on prenatal care. If you are bleeding or have severe abdominal pain, go to the emergency room.
Which signs should not wait?
- Bleeding between periods, after intercourse or after menopause.
- Persistent pelvic pain or pain with intercourse.
- Discharge with a bad odor, burning or itching that does not improve.
- A lump, dimpling or discharge in a breast.
- Periods so heavy they soak a pad every hour.
None of them is normal "because of age"; all have treatment when checked in time.
What about the breasts?
Know how your breasts look and feel and consult about any change. Current guidelines recommend a mammogram every two years starting at 40; we tell you where to get it and review the result with you.
What happens at menopause?
Around age 50, hot flashes, insomnia, vaginal dryness and mood changes are common. There are hormonal and non-hormonal treatments; the choice depends on your symptoms and history. It is also the time to watch bones, cholesterol and blood pressure.
